Note the ring necked pheasant.
Newton Hills State Park is south of Canton, South Dakota on the west side of the Big Sioux River.  We were there at the height of fall colours on a hot day, +/- 90°F, Oct. 2nd.  The hardwood bush was gorgeous but the bugs were bad in some places. The carefully groomed trails were quite a contrast to those we rode in the Black Hills!  We met many local riders on the trails;  all trails available to horses can be ridden in a day.
The bush
Compare this trail to the one that goes to Mt. Rushmore!
Trails were well marked and organized.
Tom on Beloeil and ponying Spence;  the honey locust added its own splash of colour.
